Most parents who recall their own college application process remember the SAT the same way—you took it once, got whatever score you got and then moved on with your life.   Today, preparing for the SAT (or the ACT) has become a right of passage for kids.  And parents are left to sort through the various and often expensive options of classes and tutors.

The Most Overused College Application Essay Topics

(Our peacekeeping mission to protect students from cliché crossfire)

“Blood drive” essays. They make a lot of admissions officers want to draw their own blood by jabbing themselves with a paper clip, as one applicant after another claims that one on-campus blood drive changed his life and made him appreciate the importance of serving humanity.

Last Updated on Tues, 11 May 2010.  Go to Westchestergov.com for more info  on your school if it is not listed here.  At the first indication of a potential problem at the plant, emergency officials might decide to relocate schoolchildren as a precaution. The children would be taken with their teachers by bus to School Reception Centers located outside the Emergency Planning zone. The School Reception Centers provide temporary care for children awaiting pick-up by parents. Children who are relocated to School Reception Centers will be registered and will stay there, under the care of school officials and daycare providers, until parents can pick them up.

Before being a stay at home mom, I was a special education teacher for 12 years. Over the years, I compiled a list of on line resources that I used in the classroom, not knowing then that they would be so useful as a parent.  Most of the websites are free and have endless tools to help your child in reading, writing, handwriting, math or simply free coloring pages.  These sites are great to enrich your child’s learning or to help them catch up.  Here are my favorites:

C.H.A.R.M. stands for "Croton Humanities Arts Reflection Music."  This is a program that focuses on the humanities, including history, language, law, literature, performing and visual arts, religion, philosophy and literature.  Funded by a combination of a grant from the community group Arts in Our Schools (AIOS) and the school district, the board of education will discuss implementation of this experimental program and learnings thus far.

Virtual High School allows CHHS seniors the opportunity to take an on-line course offered by a world wide consortium of school districts.  Students may take courses that we cannot offer at CHHS due to our size.  Selections include Advanced Placement courses, courses in creative writing and genetics, and advanced (college level) mathematics classes (to name a few).  Our students in these courses have classmates from around the world.  Some of our students who completed their first VHS course during the first semester will share their experiences with the board of education at the January 20 workshop.  To learn more about VHS, click on the following link:

TOP 10 WAYS TO HELP WITHOUT HURTING DURING THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS

1 0 . ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR CHILD’S STRESS – AS WELL AS YOUR OWN. Much of the stress about applying to college is self-induced. The fall is certainly going to be a very busy time for you and your child, but millions of people have gotten through it, and so will you.
9 . MAKE A MASTER CALENDAR OF IMPORTANT DEADLINES. Deadlines rule the college admissions process. Buy a large calendar that you can put on the fridge or in another prominent place. Write in application deadlines, due dates for financial aid forms, dates for SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Tests, etc.

Five Common Errors That Can Keep Applicants Out of Top Colleges

1.They write unoriginal college essays.

Every year, admissions officers read hundreds of essays about the same topics, such as “how my work on Student Government at Ossining High School taught me the value of hard-work and responsibility,” and “how my volunteer work in the Appalachian mountains showed me the importance of helping others.” Successful applicants avoid clichéd topics and instead write revealing, original essays that only they could tell.
