The Hendrick Hudson High School Cross Country Track Team was awarded a prize for being the most enthusiastic volunteers at the second annual Westchester Toughman Triathlon held on Sunday, September 13.
Twenty-three members, some dressed in Sailor suits to represent the Hendrick Hudson mascot, helped to cheer on the tri-athletes who participated in the "half iron" distance event that challenges participants to a 1.2 mile swim in the Hudson River, a 56-mile bike loop across Northern Westchester, and a half marathon run through the Harmon section of Croton and up across the Croton Dam.
The American Cancer Society sponsored the event to raise funds to help with cancer research and patient care.
“Having the Hen Hud Sailors in sailor suits was truly a highlight of the race for many participants and hopefully the start of a tradition we can keep for years to come,” said Eve Hartman, Volunteer Captain, in her note advising Coach Marcia Bailey of the honor bestowed on the Cross Country Team.
The students were stationed at a site in Croton. They assisted the tri-athletes with directions, encouragement, water, and much needed comic relief.
Twenty-three students in grades 8-12 represented Hen Hud. Their prize consisted of a $250 donation to the team, T-shirts and tote bags.
Some of the proceeds will be donated to the National Children’s Tumor Foundation, the charity that will benefit from Athletic Director Thomas Baker’s run in the New York City marathon on November 1.
A check and the other prizes will be presented to the team at their Homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 3.
