What is a Food Co-op? A Food Co-op is a group of families buying food together and sharing the labor involved to save money and/or to get better products or products normally unavailable in their area.
What is Purple Dragon Co-op? Purple Dragon Co-op was formed in 1987 to bring natural foods into our area at prices closer to wholesale. In 1989, we began working to improve the availability of exquisitely fresh organic produce for our members. Janit London, a songwriter and veteran of many food co-ops, with 20 years’ experience in the Natural Foods business, designed Purple Dragon’s unique format, i.e., a new low-labor co-op model that works for today’s busy families.
There is a local co-op in Croton. For more info: http://www.purpledragon.com/index.html

Bargains can be found in your local farmers' market if you follow these simple tips.
1. The early birds get the best produce.
2. Shop around before you choose. (The cheaper, better-looking lettuce may be a few stands away.)
3. Take your own bags and shop for the heavy stuff first (apples, potatoes) so it can go at the bottom and lighter produce can go on top.
4. Ask vendors for recipes.
5. Go ahead and leave home without your American Express card. (Bring cash.)
6. The bargains tend to be vegetables, not fruit.
7. Meat, eggs, dairy—usually eco-friendly and often overlooked.
8. Leave pets at home.
9. Don’t haggle.

We grow vegetables, herbs & flowers, and board horses on our small, sustainable heritage farm in the lower Hudson Valley that has been in our family for a century. We grow a diverse array of vegetables in two gardens, which comprise less than one acre. In 2010, all our produce is being sold direct to customers through an email order system. I choose to grow many heirloom, open-pollinated varieties, which have wonderful, unique flavors and colors. I also enjoy growing a variety of culinary herbs, edible flowers, perennial flowers, and vibrant summer cutting flowers. I dry flowers throughout the season and sell my everlasting flower bouquets in fall & winter.
We believe that local food systems are vital for the sustainable future of our community and country.
