Ahhhh- School is back in session!! It is a perfect time to re-print a list of meal ideas which help our children meet the demands school and activities ask of them. Since I published this list (one of the early MoM publications) I’ve tweaked the meal ideas to include added nutrition as well as cutting down on preparation time. Due to my own schedule change, I have 15 minutes to get breakfast and lunch made for my two school age children. Since time is of the essence, it was important for me to have options that didn’t require much preparation.

Relax. As parents our job is to serve a variety of healthy foods and get our children exposed to them-it is not our job to force them to eat.

- All fresh; frozen or dried fruit
- Any fruit with a nut butter for dipping
- Pomegranate (cut open and let kids spoon out and eat)
- Baby carrots
- Cucumber slices
- Grape tomatoes
- Peppers-sliced
- Steam snow peas or sugar snap peas chill and serve cold
- Steam edamame in the pod and let kids pick apart and eat
- Chickpeas-toast in the oven for about 30 minutes at 300 degrees

Nitrate free hot dogs on whole grain bun
Plain yogurt flavored with 1tbsp raisins;1tbsp seeds; touch of agave nectar
Pasta marinara-use whole grain pasta
Pasta primavera-use frozen vegetables for a shortcut
Turkey meatloaf

Why it is sending the wrong message to our kids
|
The ultimate goal of rewarding children is to help them internalize positive behaviors so that they will not need a reward. Rewarding children in the home or in the classroom does not need to involve candy or food. Using candy or food as a reward reaches beyond the short-term benefits of good behavior.
