Need an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc? Try this white wine
from the Rheinhessen. It’s has a fruity bouquet of citrus and green apples
followed by flavors of lime, grapefruit and apricots. Lively acidity gives it a fresh,
long finish. “Trocken” signifies the wine is dry. The grape Muller-Thurgau is
named for Dr. H. Muller, from Thurgau , Switzerland who crossed Riesling with a
variety named Madeleina Royale. Great find at a great price.
COL DE LAIROLE 2007, Coteaux du Languedoc, (France)
Rich, deep black cherry color is followed by a forward bouquet of spice and
mature fruit. The blend for this wine includes syrah with its complexity and
raspberry and herb flavors, some pepper and licorice from the Carignan grape,
and hints of cherry from Grenache grape all reinforced by the Mourvedre grape,
the staple of province wines, that gives it good structure.
Both wines were purchased from your local wine merchants and cost below
$15 the bottle.
