As a Home Stager and Interior Designer, one of the most important aspects of my work is dealing with the existing furnishings. Achieving a fresh new decor by rearranging, editing or even taking an item from one room and using it for something completely different in another offers exciting possibilities.
After all the hoopla of the holidays, most kid’s rooms are a disaster and overflowing with loot. One of my favorite post-holiday events for the dreary indoor days was redesigning my children’s bedrooms using only what was there. It is the perfect time of year to lift everyone’s spirits by recycling. It’s free, its fun and it is instant decor! One year my kids used table cloths as bedspreads, tin wash buckets for leggos and an old TV console from the garage turning it into a bench with pillows on it.
Have your kids come up with ideas for rearranging their rooms (OK, so moving the bed into the closet or under the desk is not an option, but moving it to the other side of the room is fine). For parents, it is the perfect opportunity to eliminate unused toys. It is amazing how easy it is to transform a room simply by moving some furniture and eliminating clutter.
Give your kids permission to pick out one object or piece of furniture from another area in the house to use in their room. (Think table lamp, step stool, bathroom rug, NOT the dining room table). You will be amazed at how inventive they can be. Children love the excitement of going to sleep in their “new” rooms. This creative experience is a wonderful way of empowering your kids, rejuvenating their room’s decor and certainly the biggest bang for absolutley NO bucks!
