People are always shocked when I tell them that my children are adopted. In fact , it has turned into a sort of a game with me. When I meet someone new, I wait to tell them they are adopted until AFTER they have met my kids and tell me how darling they are (which they always do) ...the look of shock on their face often follows a question like “ are you sure” or “ which kids”.
We were in Maine ,this summer, reuniting with some friends I have not seen since middle school . After a lovely lobster lunch, I told them. They were both surprised and said the expected thing. “They look just like you, especially your son!”
In fact, the day my mom met my son, at the ripe old age of 9 days, she said the same thing. I thought she was just being sentimental, but sure enough, I looked at photos of me at the same age and we do look a lot alike. The real mystery is that my daughter who looks NOTHING like me or my husband looks very much like her brother. She acts and speaks with my same inflections and quotes, but has my husbands wild, enthusiastic energy.
I have been told that facial imitation is a huge thing with babies. Since similar facial muscles are engaged while babies imitate their parents laughing and smiling, similar facial features are developed, thus a similar look...but that can only go so far. I think that the reason that so many adoptive children look like their families is because they were meant to be..one way or another they were meant to be together, as a family! I think that you just end up looking like....love!.
