No matter what your religion or where you were born...no matter how or what you celebrate; the month of December is an event, tailor made for children.
This is the season full of family and friends, lights and winter themes; woven with the promise that if they were “good” or “lucky” or “generous of spirit or heart” that they, children all over the world, will be rewarded with all sorts of treasures both big and small. This is the one time of year that I really don’t talk much about the fact that the kids are adopted. Why, you may ask? Because, I feel that this time of year that all children want to feel like children everywhere... full of anticipation, hope & joy! That overwhelming, exuberant, common feeling of 'what is to come'!
Don't you remember talking to all for you friends about what you hope to get and what the hottest toy of the year was? Remember complaining to your friends about your mom and/or dad's most embarrassing, annoying tradition that they always make you do. During the holidays , when I get together with friends and family, we all sit around and swap stories about the dry fruit cake or the silly songs we had to sing; about the spicy London Broil or the bland turkey. We laugh and recall how Susie’s mom only wanted blue lights on the tree and how Johnie’s dad used to lecture on how tinsel has to be hung one at a time. How Peggy’s Menorah was always in the dining room window not the living room like Sam's. Traditions, family, memories and presents...everything a child loves and what we all want our kids to have!
My children may be adopted but they are living with us and our traditions..traditions they will complain about and reminisce over and hopefully, will lovingly pass down to their children ..who, adopted or not, will want to feel the same magic of the season! It is, in fact, the most WONDERFUL time of the year to be a kid...and a parent too!
