Still continuing with the starting process…We did the agency, got our lawyer, and did the home study. Now, on to the paper work. Again… We had to plant a forest for the amount of paper work we had. This was before the age of computers and any online stuff. It was only 12 years ago but so much has changed!
The last step before the waiting game begins is the New York State approval process. I was a boring child and teen. I have never been in a court room, police station or have anyone question my worth, value or competence. This was a huge first for me.
We had to get physicals, to see it we were physically able to care for a child…we had to get ourselves interviewed and fingerprinted in the police station, just to make sure we were not pedophiles or children collectors or other horrific creatures that are on this earth. We had to go to family court to be legally certified to accept a child. Once all of the paper work was presented to the judge said to us…” it seems so insane to have people that really want to be parents go thru so much. Thank you for doing this. You will make great parents”. That was a wonderful gesture.
We were feeling very stressed, very anxious and very invaded! It is another hoop to jump and another step closer to your goal. But it is harder to go thru this process if you do not have a great support system. I would call my lawyers every step of the way to make sure we were doing the right thing. We call our agency 10 times a week for reassurance, and an energy boost. You do get drained and disenchanted because you think it will never end. It is important that you talk about your feelings, needs and fears so that the process is a smooth and happy as possible. If you have the support and faith that your family is coming… You will make it thru!
