Do you have a barely used two-wheel bike with training wheels that a child might want for the holidays? How about a video game that’s collecting dust? These are just a few examples of the kinds of things that can be listed on Westchester County’s Treasure Hunt website at www.westchestergov.com/treasures.

It's illegal to toss old phones in the trash, so bring yours to a Verizon Wireless HopeLine Drop Box, where its memory will be wiped out and it'll go to help a victim of domestic violence. Or just send your phone back to Verizon and they will process and reprogram it, so it can be used again. AT&T has collection boxes at each of its stores; phones go to service personnel or charitable organizations. Government offices also accept cell phones like Peekskill City Hall, 840 Main St, Peekskill. For other locations, visit westchestergov.com/cellphone or call 914-813-5441.

Instead of buying new, consider swaping for items you need. One of my favorite swapping sites is swaptree.com, where you can trade books, CDs, DVDs, and video games. You pay a small shipping charge to send your item to another person and you get an item back free. There are also sites like www.u-exchange.com where you can swap all kinds of things. Also be sure to check out the bartering section of craigslist.org. |
