Make Your Summer Meaningful

Summer is finally here.  School is over.  Thank God.  Final exams, end of year parties, and state tests are done.  The new summer schedule has taken shape and your children are more than likely feeling good.  The stress level has dropped dramatically and your children no longer need the same degree of support from you.  It’s time to kick back and start to enjoy.  Now’s the time to take advantage of this time before September and the crazy schedule begins again.  Make your summer meaningful to you by doing something you have always wanted to do but have felt too busy or guilty to do.  The summer will be over in eight weeks and you will wonder where it went.  Stretch yourself and do something meaningful for you.  Here are some ideas:

  • Read a book you have been meaning to read.
  • Take the exercise, craft, or academic class that you have always wanted to.
  • Make time to catch up with the people you have been thinking about that you never seem to get a chance to see.
  • Volunteer at a local food pantry, soup kitchen, hospital, nursing home etc.  It feels good to make someone feel better.
  • Take up the instrument that you have always wanted to.
  • Visit local museums, fairs, and festivals. These can be nice family outings.
  • Make an effort to just relax.  Take up meditation

Take advantage of the low stress level in the home by doing something you really want to do.  September and the crazy schedules will be back before you know it.  Wouldn’t it be great to be able to say that you accomplished something meaningful for you this summer.  You will feel refreshed and accomplished and ready for the new school year.

Keep a shoe rack outside the door or in the garage so kids can take off their shoes BEFORE they drag the dirt inside.  (Works great for husbands too!)
