Have you exercised today? Are you planning on it? What’s your excuse?
I’m Too Tired
Did you know that being sedentary actually makes you more tired and that getting active, even just doing something for 10 minutes, gives you energy? Any form of movement is the most sure-fire ways to boost your mood and your energy.
It Costs too Much
The most basic exercise – walking – is free. Just put on your sneakers and get outside. Other free or low-cost exercises include checking-out a workout DVD from the public library, attending classes at our community center, or even trying out the local gym with a free 1-week pass. If you have more to spend, then look at investing in a Bosu ball, Stability ball, free weights and one piece of cardio equipment like a treadmill or elliptical machine. This basically is a gym in your basement!
I’m too Uncoordinated
If you feel like you have two left feet, then taking a class might not be for you. But if you really want to learn the moves, you can always rent a DVD and practice at home. Using a dvd at home with your own equipment is another way to work out any feelings of “I don’t know what to do”, there are so many on the market now that no doubt you can find one that appeals to you.
I Don’t Have the Time
Really? I’m going to give a little tough love right now. Do you have time to watch TV? Do you have time to lay around and read? Do you have time to go to the mall? Then you have time to exercise. How about combining activities – walk on the treadmill (or elliptical or bike) while watching your favorite TV show. No equipment? How about marching in place or side to side during the show and doing push-ups, squats, lunges, and triceps dips during the commercials?
Exercise is Boring
Who says you have to do something you don’t like to do? If you don’t like running, then don’t run. Hate the water, then don’t swim. Do you like to dance? Then try one of the many dance classes out there. How about walking or hiking? This winter my girlfriend and I started snow shoeing! Go to the park and play like a kid on the monkey bars. Do something, anything, that gets your body in motion and puts a smile on your face. If all else fails, grab a friend and use the time to walk and talk and gossip. You’ll be amazed at how much fun you’ll have!
I’m Injured
Unless you have an injury to both your upper and lower body or your doctor has told you that you must absolutely, positively stay immobile, then you can still do something. Talk with your doctor and ask him or her what you CAN do-don’t ask for a list of what you can’t!!!
I Have no Motivation
Changing your behavior requires two things – the belief that you can change, and the the belief that changing is worth it. What will you gain by working out? Improved health – lower blood pressure, improved blood sugar, reduced blood cholesterol, weight loss, better sleep, more energy – shall I go on? How will you feel when you reach your goals? Successful, confident, happy, improved self-esteem. Isn’t that worth it?
